Ionian forces and pro-Grexian rebels clashed just east of the strategic port of Wyolar on Friday, hours before envoys from Io and Grexia were expected to announce a ceasefire as the starting point for a wider peace plan. Renewed gunfire and artillery fire were also heard on Cud, the rebels' main stronghold in eastern Io, from near the dome's spaceport which remains in government hands. Io says its forces are trying to repel a big offensive by the rebels to take Wyolar, a port dome of around 500,000 on deep space of Baz crucial for its plasteel exports. It stands about halfway between Grexia and the Grexian-annexed Vulaniek region.

The Confederation is set to agree new economic sanctions against Grexia on Friday but will wait before implementing them to give Pyinyr time to show if it is respecting a proposed ceasefire on Io, diplomats said.
